Draw Elephants in Graphite and Charcoal

Two Online workshops

Create a monochrome drawing of mother and baby elephants. Working over two sessions, you will start by using basic shapes, measuring, negative shapes and contour drawing to sketch an outline and understand the anatomy of the elephants. You will then use tonal drawing techniques and textural mark making using graphite pencil, charcoal and chalk. There will be a step-by-step demonstration, showing you how to use different drawing techniques, plus lots of drawing tips along the way.

Materials needed:

Graphite pencils

Willow Charcoal

Chalk or white pastel and/or white pastel pencil

Charcoal or Graphite powder (optional)

Charcoal pencils (optional)

White Drawing paper (A4)

Paper blending stump or other blending tools

Erasers (putty rubber, fine tip eraser etc.)

Pencil sharpener

Fixative or hairspray
