Drawing Tutorial: Raccoon in Charcoal

Learn how to draw a Raccoon with Bethany, following along with the demonstration step by step using reductive drawing techniques in charcoal. 

In this video Bethany introduces the main types of charcoal, then demonstrates reductive drawing technique and furry mark making to create a tonal drawing of a cheeky racoon against a dark background.  Learn new skills as Bethany shares with you useful drawing tips including a little on measuring proportions and fixing your charcoal drawings.

You will need: 

A Greyscale Reference photo -
printed out.
• Willow charcoal
• Drawing/cartridge paper or a 
sketchbook (A4/A3 size 
suggested, you are welcome to go 
larger if possible!)
• Putty rubber
• Eraser
• Spray Fixative or hairspray 
• Paper/sketchbook for practice and 
notes
• Compressed charcoal (optional)
• Charcoal pencils (optional)
• Chalk (optional)
• Blending stumps, tortillion or 
other tools e.g. cotton buds, 
make up applicators, cloth… 
(optional)
• An Apron and something to cover 
your table with; if using charcoal 
be prepared for mess!
